Wasn't AstraZeneca a late-90s merger of two legacy businesses? If we're counting those as new companies from 20 years ago, surely ExxonMobil takes the crown.

Better example would be any of the six $10B+ biotherapeutics cos started since 1995 -- Actelion, BioMarin, Pharmasset, Seattle Genetics, Kite, and Juno.

Biotechs are all high capex b/c of dev't difficulty + high uncertainty of success of any compound. Winning high-capex biz was always built by regulation and subsidy; this remains true. Reg tilts risk/reward to make the business worth it, and subsidy opens opportunities to many.
