I honestly think one of the best design decisions in Rails was being extremely proscriptive about where things went and then hitting *all* the places it could be in order. Dependency management customization is opt-in, which is ~right for new world where 1 computer ~= 1 program.

(Sadly, it wasn't able to solve the problem that it sits on top of ruby dependency management, but even that is a breath of fresh air relative to some other options.)

In 2010 I spent literally a week debugging a problem with a coworker's Java code that worked on his Linux laptop but didn't work on my Mac. The answer turned out to be case-sensitivity in the filesystem
