Patrick and @paulg im a fan, but i think you can see a lot of folks scratching their heads why this would be limited to universities, given that youve been so thoughtful about criticizing their monopoly on science and innovation. i dont want to be critical of charity but... :/
I'm a critic of *funding mechanisms* but a large fraction of the best researchers are still in universities. I'm very supportive of people at private companies doing this work too, of course, but they don't tend to be reliant on external funding.
This young lad deserves that grant,
His name is Usman, his living in gombe state,a 300 level student of mechanical engineering department at A.B.U Zaria... this is not his first invention.

The world we a better place because of minds like yours
What about companies doing research? We're building a stimulator that strengthens the diaphragm and reduces how long critical COVID patients need a ventilator, leading to increased ICU capacity.
I would still apply anyways
Have you considered that many of the best scientists who could benefit most from such a funding grant are not working "at an academic institution"? Perhaps extend it to groups working independently? #Covid19 #ResearchKit #mHealth
Would it be possible to allow startups to apply in addition to academics?
agree. startups would move much faster and wouldn't pay 50% of it in overhead to their university
