Why is it that public speakers are often advised to slow down, but the average podcast listener speeds up?

YC advice is to slow down. Think it’s true for demo day. Limited time. Pauses create tension. Allow you to emphasise what really matters. But maybe YC demo day unique circumstances?

Live presentations don’t have a rewind button, so if you lose the audience, you might have lost them for the entire talk. Podcasts and YouTube have very easy 5sec rewind buttons

People used to be thicker than today.

I suspect there’s a lot of truth to this. We are used to the throat clearing and other time wasting of most speech. cf movies and TV where anything pre-90s has unbearably slow plot. (Even those fast talking 40s movies)
