I've been to some fantastic izakayas that are /just like/ punters. Obviously they /look/ nothing like punters, but they exude the same grittiness, have had the same staff forever, and feel like they're held together with tape but they're always full.

That being said, the izakaya you're talking about exists too and is also always full, but it seems to be full of people that /already/ know each other exclusively. I might go to one of those if I'm already in the right mood, but a place like Punter's if I want to change it.
