It seems this is going in phases. China laid the blueprint for the consumer internet, but now the Pentagon is recruiting Microsoft & Amazon for explicit defense purposes. What does China think? The only real defense contractor that has unfettered access to every market is Boeing.

Data nationalism is also on the rise and a somewhat different problem. Governments like India's are frequently lobbied to ensure all business data are stored locally. There are some decent arguments in favor, but the most zealous proponents seem to be well-placed rent-seekers.
