It’s indirectly related to the piece about science that @michael_nielsen and I worked on last year:https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/11/diminishing-returns-science/575665/ …

One understated aspect of an otherwise comprehensive article is the difficulty of measuring progress. Metrics are vital for process improvement but hard to generate, prone to Goodhart's law, and often both excessively retrospective and broad.

There are already entire fields that study these things. History of Science. History of Technology. Science and Technology Studies. Sociology of Science. I’m not sure y’all are inventing anything so much as not reading all the stuff that already exists.

You could go on a tour of the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, England and learn about the history of the Industrial Revolution.https://www.scienceandindustrymuseum.org.uk/

Eric Weinstein and Peter Thiels brought up a good point recently on The Portal podcast: it’s not just that there aren’t many true polymaths (people who can speak definitively on many subjects) left, but when you ask subject matter experts, they claim their field is progressing.

A few Qs: 1) How do you get people in their fields to speak truthfully about their progress. 2) if science progresses by death of a giant, how long have ideas remained in fields? 3) how do you measure the rate of novelty in research as opposed pumping out papers?
