I noticed that an increasing number of my engineer friends don't seem very excited about working in the tech industry anymore. I asked one why this was true, expecting him to give a politics-related answer. Instead, he said "Tech isn't creating the Next Big Thing anymore."

There's also the concentration hypothesis. Maybe the domination of Google, Facebook, and a few other biggies is demoralizing?

I often ask the engineers & builders in our industry about their employment decisions - the response is straightforward: "I'd rather work to build the next financial system than work on ads at google/facebook" (the next financial system = public blockchains / crypto)
