One thing I’ve come to realize that works well about this is that it’s almost never very discouraging: you’re almost always making some progress on some goals! And so easier to stick with it.

This is great, thanks Patrick!

"Goals without next steps then stick out..." Patrick, I think this was even more insightful than you realize! Reshaping a few of my own checklists with this principle in mind. Kind of can't believe I didn't have the abstract goals layer before

Oh also I think you just reinvented the OKR

I was very bad at making TO-DO lists until I heard the Warren Buffet story on lists for time management. It is called Buffet focus. https://jamesclear.com/buffett-focus

But I realize your original tweet was about "checklists" as opposed to "Todo lists". The value of checklists is explained beautifully in Atul Gawande's book and famous TED talk:https://youtu.be/L3QkaS249Bc

Like this! One of my plans this year is to start figuring out how to externalize more of the items on my equivalent list.

Can't recommend Workflowy, com enough for this type of stuff. It's a super flexible outliner and half of my brain is in the form of lists / wikis on subjects I care / learn about. You can filter out keywords / hashtags e.g. "goals" deep in your list hierarchy instantly etcpic.twitter.com/jsqTOtxMC5

Have an Evernote that does this. Wish it was prettier.

Also started writing anti-goals
