Vertical integration necessary from day one = high transaction costs in a market with low customer LTV. Financing ecosystem also very undeveloped so firms need to be cashflow positive early. Startups need to think like the whole ecosystem and collaborate.

Great article, have heard similar stories many times. You also see much more vertical integration (e.g. we will be bringing bottle making for our honey in house due to a lack of local suppliers in Tanzania).

One road block to reduced tariffs though is that a large % of already paltry government revenues come from tariffs as these are one of the easiest to tax revenue sources. To really see more trade liberalisation, one will need to figure out how to replace this revenue.
