Agree most strongly with this. Small groups are the hidden roots in all biographies which tend to focus on individuals. Way more returns from studying and improving small group theory imo. I track all small groups I come acrosspic.twitter.com/3Fwzwn2Fpg

I haven't found a uniquely great history, but they were by all accounts highly influential. I just love their literal name. I stumbled on them while researching early applied probability. This f. ex. coincided with the birth of commercial insurance:https://www.nature.com/articles/007124b0 …

Their purpose was to disseminate knowledge for those pursuing self education. They were basically that eras @gwern and they opened other chapters including in Boston

This is great, and I'd love more on it. A few others that come to mind: Young British Artists https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_British_Artists … The "Y-Scraper" crew from the early YC days Gertrude Stein's salon in Paris @kevinakwok any reason you haven't made this list public?

Yeah all great ones! No particular reason. I don't keep it in particularly polished form. At some point will write post on small group theory and probably share most of it

This is so true and crucial for understanding how hard work gets done! Reminds me of (1) Brian Eno's *scenius* https://www.wired.com/2008/06/scenius-or-comm/ … and (2) my hunch that *all* individual achievement is group effort, it's just that we only see the tip of the iceberg.

So competition + support (min. in the form of 1 smart classmate / 1 attentive spouse) = exponential results. Good to look at outliers eg families that both supported and competed with each other to big result (Mann's diaries are WOW); or my favourite school class, The Martians.

A really interesting one somewhat long those lines is “What It Takes” which is the story of the 1988 presidential campaign and all those that aspired through primaries. Not a group working together but biography of a set of people aiming for one goal.

I recently read https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073NNNMBB/  (Meltdown: Why our systems fail and what we can do about it). Some good insight into how sameness of background and thinking results in systems failures. Not precisely what your quote is about but interestingly somewhat opposite.

The book Wright Brothers do the group biography really well--contrasting personalities of the two brothers, yet towards a goal. The author, David McCullough graphs other players meticulously incl their sister's Katharine.https://www.amazon.com/Wright-Brothers-David-McCullough/dp/1476728755 …
