That is awesome. I remember getting excited when my roommate brought home a foosball table. My how times have changed...and the future is pretty cool!

At risk of asking a stupid / obvious question - what can you do with it?
-
Sequence DNA, potentially also RNA, with very long read lengths. Aims to replace large, immobile, and more expensive "shotgun" sequencers - but has some way to go in quality and amount of data. Awesome tech.
-
Thanks! So... encoding / decoding a large amount of data directly into the DNA / RNA string? I'm fascinated, but I feel like I'm enormously under-educated on the potential use cases here :)
-
It's useful for reading the DNA or RNA directly. Has been used to identify strains of ebola in the field. Longer term, having longer reads from DNA means more accurate alignment to known sequences and better identification of new genes.

twitter is a pain sometimes, but you can't beat it for this kind of stuff. Thanks, appreciate the insight :)

What chip is it? Does it output files compatible for upload to sites like FTDNA/MyHeritage/GedMatch?
-
minION is more a dongle/device, with a usb plug to a computer. It's a bit different to the technologies employed by my heritage/Etc, in that it can sequence every letter in your genome, not just targeted regions. Thus the computation is more complicated. This will improve in time
-
So it's a full genome sequencing then?
-
Whole* Genome Sequencer (WGS). Yes.
-
So I'm guessing it should be possible to extract specific SNPs from the result to generate CVS files compatible with the testing companies, or am I missing something?
-
Yes, but the tech and bioinformatics for the tech, is still developing. So, eventually, yes, but the power of this tech is not so much SNPs, and SNPs are not really the be all and end all of genomics. The current tech has just been good at them, thus why they have been overused

have wanted this for soooooo long! anyhow! every flow cell cost 250 or something like that!
-
Kinda worth it if you are outside US - 23andMe and Acenstry has crazy shipping fees. But on a flip side, there ain't much paid or free sites where you can import your DNA data.
-
23 and me , ancestry are not in the same game as miniIon. 23 and me only looks at gene expression, this thing could could technically sequence the whole DNA *t&c apply.
-
23&me doesn't look at expression. It looks at SNPs. Personal whole genome sequencing is available from some companies already for a few hundred quid.
-
you are right they look at SNPs. idk, why i said gene expression! idk. maybe because, i was thinking about micro arrays. for gene expression we use micro arrays and 23 and me type SNPs also use Micro arrays.
