A Mokyr-ish take from @antonhowes on the genesis of the industrial revolution: https://antonhowes.weebly.com/uploads/2/1/0/8/21082490/spread_of_improvement_working_paper.pdf …. Emphasis on diffusion, not just Baconian meliorism.pic.twitter.com/xwuMFaoGhm

To contradict myself, brilliant piece by 2 econs re: *why* some Protestant cities in Germany early 1500s adopted democratic institutions, some didn't and how public health plays a part: https://voxeu.org/article/protestant-reformation-economic-institutions-and-development … -- led to strong middle class, industry, GDP rise, Goethe, Bach.

To contradict myself 1x more: Singer's Satan in Goray great reconstructing of pre-print dissemination of ideas (note ALL major religions spread pre-print tho based on texts). "Goray" is wartime. *But*, Alhambra Decr.+Columbus+La Fleche missionaries: thinkers started to *travel*!

IRs happened bc of co-occurrence of number of factors. Ferguson (textile, wars, spices, metals), Gleick (loom, math, printing), Burke (loom, heating, lighting), et al try to reconstruct. In short, crop rotation, textile crucial, both happened not during less war but less plague.

There is underlying neuroscience for that. People, preoccupied with exploitation will never embrace change. Their brains need to be switching to the exploration mode, first. Exploitation dominaites most time since the adoption of agriculture. Exploration - in times of change
