Silicon Valley's ageism is gonna not do it any favors in terms of global perception of the tech industry. This kind of youth-fetishism is pretty dangerous in the long term.

In what way is Pioneer ageist
@jackclarkSF? I didn’t see any mention of age in the Nyt description of the project3 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

Emphasizing youth in the article seems to me like an authorial choice by
@SteveLohr that we could question here, not something that@LauraDeming or@patrickc have yet made a statement about. I do think that a statement emphasizing that "open to all" includes age would help.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

I hadn't seen that yet.
@LauraDeming@patrickc can we get a statement on this? "Open to all" and "young people" are in direct and blatant conflict.1 reply 0 retweets 8 likes -

Is there something wrong with a fund or intervention that targets young people? Or do you just want them not to use the phrase "open to all"? If Y Combinator is for young companies, why can't Pioneer Fund be for young people?

I'm just uncomfortable with phrasing around 'open to all' and a NYT article that doesn't mention the youth stuff specifically, then seeing copy on the site that makes the message different. I broadly think SV rarely considers its own ageism and this is an example of that.

Thanks for responding, Daniel! My specific grievance is that the messaging seems a little odd (especially when combined with NYT article, which has diff emphasis to website copy). I think since ageism is such a tough and touchy subject it's worth being over-specific re it.

Pioneer doesn't get to choose emphasis of NYT article! (I'm sure many companies wish they could...)

Yup, former journalist, I get it - I'm just wondering why you didn't message intentionally about the age stuff and tell the journalist your thinking here. It seems like a high bit when you look at web copy.
