I think the fact that we don't have an economic model to support development of shared OSS infrastructure is a real drag on our economy.https://twitter.com/wesmckinn/status/1020327908160794624 …

I really don’t know, but larger dollar Kickstarter might work: 4 million to support Parquet for the next 4 years. If the amount reached bidders get consulting access to devs prioritized by contrib about. Wes hires people who want to work on it.

But we need some model to break the tragedy of the commons here. Lots of free-riding and people irrationally funding internal work which is duplicated due to each company being selfish.

GitHub could do mechanism design for OS devs the way Twitch does for streamers

We're building a solution at
@tidelift that makes it easy for orgs like@stripe to pay the maintainers of the open source components they use, specifically for valuable security, legal, and maintenance assurances (& we're using@stripe to build it!

Who is this targeting exactly? I've seen several plays like this now and none of them have taken off. I'd LOVE for this to work, but there are other variables involved with an OSS project (governance etc) that typically has a funding structure coupled with it.

You buy the company like stripe did rethinkdb? :) More seriously, most worthwhile OSS is funded by a single entity to drive direction, that or is handled through foundations. That or there is a closed source paid addons play like us or gitlab tend to be.
