While @elonmusk is in the headlines for many reasons these days, this particular chart probably doesn’t get enough attention. 10 years after founding, SpaceX had ~0% market share. 16 years: >50%.pic.twitter.com/uBMEj2Y9P6

nasa is probably the biggest CUSTOMER along with the NRO. Probably followed by Iridium depends if you split Commercial resupply missions and NASA exploration missions apart. Yes US rocket technology must be done inside US. For national security reasons.

This chart only shows globally competed commercial launches, not US government missions. “Other US” refers to Boeing & Lockheed. Their skill at obtaining govt contracts & subsidies vastly exceeds ours.

Really wish people would stop saying that the government subsidizes SpaceX. The government pays for services which are vital to its missions success&for the development of mission specific technologies which NASA requires. These are contracts, not subsidies. There is a difference.

Its important to point out that SpaceX rocket launches are significantly more affordable than any other launch co. Thats not cuz the gov offsets its own cost of use, that would be like them paying more to pay less. SpaceX rocket affordability is a design quality of its engineering

No one seems to talk anymore about the $800million a year retainer ULA had. That is light years above anything SpaceX had from the government. I don’t think many people complaining about it really care about it. If they really cared they would do 2 minutes of research.

Really, someone wants to put the time and effort into a chart like that and all you can say is the colors aren't great. Really!!

Unfortunately it is true. Not such a complicated chart to make, yet very hard to read with these colours. If do it, then do it right.

SpaceX push competitors to improve and then, drive the space industry on a whole other level. This is the era of the democratization of access to space. A long awaited dream since decades.

Tesla market share of luxury vehicle will look like this very soon and solar in less than 3 years. Those moats are getting crossed one by one.
