Highly talented people can bend the curve a bit, yes. But look at how AWS is as secure as it is: There are a lot of features which they turned off or removed from Xen, and now they're going even further and getting rid of Xen completely.

AWS is like a large collection of pretty simple services. Each is relatively hard to break. I think the applications people build out of them often have lots of security issues proportional to how many they are mixing together.
