In my experience, oscillation between hard work and idleness, on all time scales, is really important for most people but rarely achieved in practice

Agree, but I'd say that at the margin, most people would benefit from focusing more on whether they're doing the right things rather than focusing on productivity. Mistakes are valuable but often because they guide people toward the right things to do.
