The power of owning demand: Google paid Apple $9B to continue to be default search on iOS. Microsoft's Bing, by contrast, generated $1.7B in revenue. So Apple's "search business" 5x Microsft's...without having a search engine.https://florentcrivello.com/index.php/2018/10/22/own-the-demand/ …

Some clarity; looks like $1.7 is quarterly so closer to $7B for Microsoft. Granted they still have lots of expenses associated with Bing while Apple likely is mostly profitable from its deal. Also, the Apple figure is an estimate from Goldman Sachs.

I think about this a lot in terms of appl leverage over goog. What would happen if they switched engines though? There would be an uproar, no? Can you imagine iPhone users on Bing?

The guy who asked you to think about which companies have leverage over Google was probably really, really good-looking.

Doesn’t really change the point, and maybe I’m misremembering, but think MSFT search biz is about $7B

When I worked at AOL, Google entered a deal to offer search engine capabilities to AOL users with a 95% rev share in favour of AOL. Poison pill.

This is almost certainly because Bing is a better search engine than Google for porn. And since they don't run ads on porn queries, yeah, chances are margins are indeed thin.
