(Which I will acknowledge, as someone who writes things substantially less ambitious than books, is harder than it sounds, which is why it is so freaking important.)

You shouldn't be putting your retirement savings in a 1% bearing savings account. Try a Vanguard 20xx Retirement fund if you aren't sure where else to start. You will average significantly more than 4%.

Exactly. The word “Should” really gunks up the message. “Save twice your income at 35” is a metric; you get to decide how you apply it. We hear too many fairy tales around wealth: - Debt is bad - Renting is throwing money away - You have to live an expensive city - And so on…
