(I generally think that when I was running software product businesses I spent ~10% of my cycles over the life of the business building products. When I was running a consultancy, ~50% of all cycles on delivery of services.)

Thats all fine and dandy until those doing marketing/sales/hiring/admin slip up and then you're not doing X all day long, you're looking for a new gig all day long.

@vranac this is why I don’t want to run a company. That stuff interests me, but I still want to write code. -
Oh, I understand you completely, I tried the middle road, and the results were not long lasting

I play biz sim games all day; I’m no stranger to the concept and principals of running a business… but I like code!

On the other hand, if you want to base a business around X *product* so you have an excuse to use & enjoy & write & talk about it, that can work.

The lesson from that small cycles on core idea also means you need to be charging 10x more for the work you do as the work will be 10x smaller with all other things you are doing or paying people to. So make sure you are happy changing more and people paying for it.

Funny, I just came across an old todo list in google tasks from when I ran my own thing ... very little was about building product. Tax, sales calls, marketing, managing payments ... was interesting comparing my list today. As a manager still admin though
