I spoke with an engineer / manager at the SSA who is a mom at our daughter's school. She hinted at some epic management battles to explain to higher-ups eager to "upgrade" the system the potential downsides. "Do you need it to work differently? If not, do not mess with this."

It also boggles my mind that the great success story of moving "nearly everyone" to digital deposit means they only send out a large city worth of paper checks each month.
