what about for students? I find it a relatively good way to practice pitching without actually having a full featured product.

I've never seen a pitch competition format represent an actual investor or customer pitch.

I think the benefit is more for the person giving the pitch and their presentation than the company and its business model. We've had a few at @CapitalPitch and our metric isn't would I invest, rather have you provided enough info for me to decided if I want to learn more.
