got an email from an (academic) publisher saying "if you're interested in making money, a book may not be for you". this feels weird to me -- obviously money isn't the *only* thing but I feel like there should be a way to make writing into a viable business!!

Good news: this is a solved problem for tech authors *if*, and it’s an important if, they are willing to devote 80% of their cycles to being a business and 20% to being an author. There are literally hundreds of people I know doing that. It’s a playbook: email email email.

The brief version of playbook: Price book at $47/$97/$247 with the higher tiers being plus bonus multimedia content (video or code samples). Promote book by writing about topic publicly; capture email signups. Run a launch sequence (~5 emails over ~2 weeks) when book released.

I am not exaggerating when I say "I literally know high schoolers who were capable of executing on this, to the tune of more-money-than-I-made-in-first-N-years-of-my-career."
