Foreign employers increasingly likely to be OK with remote over the Pacific or have local offices. It’s largely folks who would consider moving to London, and consider Tokyo a more interesting London with sharply less crime and markedly lower rents.

It depends. An engineering status of residence in Japan is strictly better than an H1B in at least one regard: it attaches to the worker not the job, so as long as you continue working in engineering (broadly defined), you can change jobs w/o having to reapply.
