I’ve seen more of this in last few years than in first 10 I lived here. Anecdata: Quality of life as high as ever. Foreign employers increasingly likely to be OK with remote over the Pacific or have local offices. It’s largely folks who would consider moving to London, and consider Tokyo a more interesting London with sharply less crime and markedly lower rents.

Doable, though I wouldn’t personally enjoy doing it. There are well-worn social structures for expatriates, particularly professional class expatriates who can solve the problems with money, in Tokyo. Some folks enjoy just jumping into the deep end.
