This rings true: when I was working for a megacorp, moving to London was a financial killer under pretty much any circumstance, and victims demanded that terms be limited to two years with a promise of promotion upon return to NY.

I don't hate the idea of spending a year or two in London - if I kept my NY comp I don't think it's terribly more expensive to live there?

Last year I left Nagoya after ~9 years of living in Japan to move to London and an engineering job. But I suspect Tokyo is a bit different to central Japan - most of the tech jobs there were embedded dev in the automotive industry
