Trying to get Internet in my new place and it’s one of those “I know you mean well, Japan...” moments: “So blah blah blah two year contract.” “Sounds great.” “Are you going to return home soon?” “... That is a deceptively difficult question but the answer relevant to you is no.”
It gets you close to a socially radioactive question about “Who is Japanese?”, which intentionally excludes Koreans (et al, but almost entirely Koreans) who were brought over during the war in unpleasant circumstances, not repatriated, and have an essentially hereditary status.

The American in me would call it “second-class citizenship” except that it’s, very intentionally, no class of citizenship whatsoever.
