Trying to get Internet in my new place and it’s one of those “I know you mean well, Japan...” moments: “So blah blah blah two year contract.” “Sounds great.” “Are you going to return home soon?” “... That is a deceptively difficult question but the answer relevant to you is no.”

This is the feeling that I constantly had when living in Japan - that the default culture was to stop people fully integrating. As a white person, no matter how long you are there, you’re treated like an outsider. I miss Japan a lot though.

It's getting better along that axis. Slowly, but certainly. (Example: four banks of four asked were willing to underwrite a mortgage for me. I got a minimum of guff in finding a condo, especially after finding particularly good agent, who does not routinely work with foreigners.)
