I'd ask a question about some minor detail mentioned in the document; is there any upside to being thought an illiterate foreigner?

This works some of the time. I think the answer to your question is situational and complicated. There are occasionally times where it pays to be assumed incapable of understanding the rules of polite society for the purpose of tactically circumventing them.
