I usually try to ask my lyft drivers why they do what they do. Flexibility is always number. They hang out in the park on a nice day. They spend time with their young children. They wouldn't trade that time for anything it seems.

Note that surveys suggest that the majority of drivers have some other kind of job and are fitting this in as a secondary activity. The median Uber driver drives 13 hours/week. You might enjoy my and coauthors paper on this topic.

Lower class guy from the US here, most people I know are desperate for steady work and decent pay. I've worked in the gig economy(bike food delivery), the flexibility is pointless without better pay, we just spend our free time dealing with being poor.

But weren’t you glad to have income while you looked for something steady? Without even having to compete for a position or have a real trade skill?

A great economist told me that there were 2 sets of people driving, split about 50/50. The first loved the flexibility, independence, lifestyle fit (student, artist, parent), and got a great income boost. The other half desperately wanted more growth, benefits, and regularity.

As a former driver...yes, getting paid about min wage, or less, is super desirable...harassment free managers, are replaced by harassing customers...also, as a reminder, we are about 5 years away from these jobs disappearng anyways to self drvng, so the job secrity is also awsome
