Quoted for accuracy. AppAmaGooBookSoft have a quirky incentive to be, lets say, less than maximally public with regards to the existence of this part of the career arc. They rely on the people they want to attract knowing about it, but they don't cry about it not being in NYT.https://twitter.com/sehurlburt/status/992552870997147648 …

Just a PSA, I know of many people (Exact #? Hm. Over a hundred?) who are programmers making high six figures a year. That includes RSUs and bonuses but not uncertain/long vesting stock— meaning, they can withdraw that amount reliably each year. That’s just in my network, too.

A mid-career (~5 years in) competent performer at AppAmaGooBookSoft has a total package of ~$350k per year. There are tens of thousands of engineers there with a package closer to ~$800k. The people getting those packages are talented, but not unachievably so. Just market rates.

Only the few people earning this much need to add huge value. The key is scale. The software they’re writing must make a correspondingly huge impact on savings or earnings.

@sehurlburt Facebook median pay is $240k https://www.wsj.com/articles/at-facebook-median-pay-tops-240-000-1523924535 … FB has 25k employees. There are 12.5k people at FB that make more than $240k.

that logic would mean 5 years would be peak or end career. I think Patrick was, as he sometimes does, exaggerating to make a point: you can have a satisfying and profitable career at a "big." That important truth doesn't need embellishment.

I think only roles that will do that well for EMPLOYEEs (ie not founders) in most smaller tech companies is sales/biz dev with heavy commission

Sounds like you feel pay this high isn't economically based? Why would a successful company pay far more than someone is worth? I'd say they believe paying 800k instead of 200k will get them more than 600k extra revenue/savings. Perhaps hoping to hire a "10x" programmer.
