Just watched a video playback of my attendee talk at MicroConf. (*watching the video @Philip_Morgan*) I counted them up and I said "um" or "uh" 70 times in 12 minutes.
Now soliciting all suggestions for removing those tiny words from my public speaking in the future.

Video or audio record all talks. Count hesitation noises. Work on identifying the causes and doing less of them. (I use more when I'm under time pressure or when I haven't slept sufficiently, which is two things that I have in my locus of control.)

I'm so glad there was video to review. I did a tally and got to 70 in the sub-12min talk. I had both of those things working against me: time pressure & lack of sleep. Thinking back I could have taken the morning to myself to get centered. Will do that for future events.

Barack Obama is a master of this. No "um"s, just silence, until several seconds later, he scraps the entire sentence and says, "Look, ..."
