Periodic observation for the benefit of junior developers: You do not have to be embarrassed about not knowing a particular bit of syntax or API. Googling things efficiently is a core job skill. ~15 years in I'll still look up "append to array javascript."

Most bizarre feedback from an interview whiteboard coding exercise; you are too reliant on your IDE. They also said that no-one had ever answered the question "Emacs or Vim" with "neither, they both suck". It's almost like they thought the typing should be the hardest part.

Once I started focusing on core concepts of languages, how frameworks extend and the underlying concepts powering both, I leveled up 10x more than I did when I was worried about memorizing jargon. Then whenever I came across jargon, I was able to understand it almost instantly.

I really like this article, especially the tips on preparation. Sometimes though I actually prefer whiteboarding. That's if they're not insisting to see exactly what code I'd write but how I'd solve the problem. Almost a different skill when the problem is poorly defined.

My latest tutorial, @LearnEnough JavaScript to Be Dangerous (currently in preparation), includes many of the exact Google searches I used to figure things out. https://www.learnenough.com/javascript-tutorial/javascript#aside-technical_sophistication …pic.twitter.com/jibfT2RDRb

What's important, though, is to be able to look up information quickly. In that, I find @alfredapp + @kapeli 's Dash to be an immensely powerful combo!

Much better to google and do it right than to think you know and get it wrong. Machines are much much better at remembering details than we are. Use them! What we need to be able to remember is *that the information exists at all* - then we know we should search for it.
