I feel like the video game industry has not really evolved with the consumer group, still pitching "100+ hours of gameplay!" when what many of us really want is "An engaging play session wrapped up in 30 minutes while the baby is sleeping."

It probably says a lot about me that I understand that this is a thing that people in the professional class do but I cannot name any type of "nice bottle of wine" and don't have a good idea on the price point other than "Probably like $80 or so? I've never bought any."

A lot of indie games and many retro games fit into this category. For the latter, this is especially true if they're arcade game ports, which makes a lot of sense: 25¢ of fun (not counting inflation) per sitting.

I’ve been finding some love in “story” games for the Switch. Rime is about 4-6hrs, will make you cry for sure, and is worth every penny. Oxenfree and Golf Story also amazing.

But yeah, 100% agree, I want more “bottle of wine” games. I’ll always have a few “hundreds of hours” staples, but even those are 5 minute increments like Rocket League.

I think you just described "Casual Gaming", aka "they're not really true video games according to The Nerds" which is an enormous market. Nintendo Switch, XBox Live's independent games marketplace, and a __ton__ of mobile games these days have stuff that falls under this banner

Indies and Casuals do this, AAA titles don't. You're right, it's weird. For Indies, consider something like AntiHero, a Victorian crime/gang game that's basically an electronic board game, for instance.

As far as I can tell these games do exist, but they’re coming from independent developers or small teams. I haven’t actually played it, but something like Firewatch seems like a prototypical example?

Isn’t this basically what’s driven the rise in board game popularity? Far cheaper to develop (I assume) and fits the purpose.

Nintendo Switch (Mario Kart and soon Mario Party) comes the closest to this segment
