a community attracts to it people who are, take your pick, either very high variance individuals or who enjoy high conflict environments. The controversy du jour is not merely not worth the heartburn today; it is *astoundingly* not worth the toxicity it invites in the future.

“Who is he subtweeting?” a) Nobody; this is about a social phenomenon. b) It is not for nothing that Twitter was the first platform to codify subtweeting as a form of conduct, partially because of bad product decisions and partly by teaching many users that it’s so fun for them

I really dislike subtweets. If they could plausibly be about me, they suck because I worry they could be. If they aren't about me, all that happens is I want to know the story. I far prefer being tagged in reasonable, polite disagreements.
