Very candidate-friendly language could look like: We're happy to arrange your travel for you at our expense or have you book and reimburse you, whichever is more convenient. Some people feel the need to put a dollar figure in this email; I think probably pennywise poundfoolish.

So help me I know people who interviewed at AppAmaGooFaceSoft in zombie mode because they were told to shoot for a $300 ticket and the most convenient option was $330 so they instead booked a redeye and didn't sleep prior to the interview because Rules are Rules.

Incidentally, if you're on the candidate side of things (and tell your friends): if a company tells you to book travel and you can't front the money, reply "It would be more convenient if you could book for me; could you?" No reason required.

Definitely turned down an interview right out of bootcamp bc I thought I'd have to pay for a cross-country trip I definitely couldn't afford

I had a discussion about a similar topic with some Amazon recruiters! Especially when recruiting people from academia with limited industry experience, asking about expected salary leads to panic where people fear they are shortchanging themselves.

Is there somewhere a salary grid?

That's poor communication, I really hate the handful of times I've interviewed (in the UK) for a perm role assuming travel comp & been told "oh we don't do that". Yeah, if you're not covering my train fare I don't trust you as an employer.

My first software job was a comped ticket Cape Town to Johannesburg. It lasted 14 years.

Years ago, new job for big international (very excited) and they wanted me to travel to their HQ for the first month. I was NOT new to Tech, yet still a bit surprised they were offering to pay, and couldn't quite get over the feeling the other shoe would drop until my 2nd week!
