I think "Japan isn't creative and just excels at copying things and then improving on them" is commonly believed among smart people in both Japan and the US, and is one of the wrongest beliefs that that statement is true of.

Not my view, but not all kinds of creativity are created equal either. That Japan so excels in cuisine I find striking, but perhaps not reassuring for what you seek.

I don't know, I think the food culture here successfully executes at both producing plates that other cities could make and also producing experiences that other cities cannot. Underrated and not easily compressible in a tweet: food infrastructure is a research frontier.
