Counterexamples: the Walkman, "ask my entire generation about video games", technology underlying about half the BOM of that phone you carry that people always give America and China credit for, Prius, the entire industrial edifice it takes to produce a Prius, etc.

Not my view, but not all kinds of creativity are created equal either. That Japan so excels in cuisine I find striking, but perhaps not reassuring for what you seek.

I don't know, I think the food culture here successfully executes at both producing plates that other cities could make and also producing experiences that other cities cannot. Underrated and not easily compressible in a tweet: food infrastructure is a research frontier.
