If you model an industry as insiders and outsiders then the momentary-outsiders have to go through years of gatekeeper controlled effort, being taxed along the way, to get insider status. Or they email the handful of people who loudly say “I talk to outsiders; hit me up.”

The surprising thing isn’t that the folks who put out that sign then get stupid amounts of deal flow (or whatever your industry calls “Good will except with concrete economics attached to it”), it is that, knowing this, the rest persist in strategy.
