So prior to showing me advertisements for games which might offend my delicate childish sensibilities, such as sequels to games I've already bought and they know I've played for 20+ hours, they put up a "Give us your birthday to calculate your age" roadblock. But COPPA!

Them asking my birthday exposes them to personal information and if I'm below 13 then saving personal information about me is a COPPA violation so they helpfully say that ~immediately after they ask my birthday for the seven hundredth time they will promptly forget it.

COPPA = Children's Online Privacy Protection Act = "Wait wait wait marketers are marketing to children? Oh lock that nonsense down; let's make it impossible to keep anything about a child in a database without parental consent. This have only the intended consequences, obviously"

I’ve wondered for a long time why they don’t save my age, and now I understand why. Super frustrating.

It's not clear to me that this is a *necessary* outcome of COPPA. Speculating without any direct knowledge, and not speaking as to goodness of this, it may be a dodge they use to *avoid* saving your age so as to maintain plausible deniability at the number of under-13s on Steam.

If only there were some way for them to use your age to determine if you're over 13.... Some kind of machine learning approach, maybe?

Steam also can't remember the fact that I logged in last time I wanted to buy something and said to remember me, so this may be incompetence, not malice, or bureaucracy... (Also, my birthdate is Jan 1... *pulls down year combobox and spins mousewheel* 1912)

I would be very unsurprised if their data shows meaningful account sharing between family members of clearly different ages, causing this response to risk mitigate
