Ryu has seen me buy enough things with a card (restaurant bills, flight tickets, etc) that he had cards figured out at about the same age. Can imagine this would be different in Japan though.

I’m not sure anyone quite learns to connect credit cards to money. Handing over hard, cold cash seems much more painful than waving or swiping a card for the same amount.
