you’re giving them too much credit - even if you immediately in a row buy 5 books in a series in order, they do not recommend the 6th book on your next page load. sometimes a dumb cigar is really a dumb cigar

The real surprise here is that the dumb algorithm probably works better in more cases than anything smarter. Otherwise they would use anything smarter.

Right. Via Bayesian probability or RFM analysis, somebody who did “action x” is more likely to do “x” again than somebody who hasn’t, like “got into an accident” or “bought refrigerator.” Doesn’t mean there aren’t related things with higher EV to advertise, but no way this is -EV
