The weirdest part of the SHLD story is that they mastered catalog based distribution before Amazon was even a twinkle in Bezos' eyes. They had their chance to be Amazon, and they decided to play financial games instead. A cautionary tale.

Can you imagine a world where we're all running on SWS and all of us joke about buying all of our hardware at Sears? Crazy how big of an opportunity that was missed.

I learned about the history of Sears in the book The Long Tail. Then I found a couple of reproductions of very early Sears catalogs at used book stores. They provide a fascinating glimpse back at the late 1800s and early 1900s.
