I grabbed the English menu by mistake at a store. “I’ll have the beef bowl with three cheeses and, oh bother, where does this list the sets?” “Oh let me get you the Japanese menu.” “That would be great.” “Yeah they dumb down the tourist one but you’ve clearly been here before.”

Now if only I can get the entire Japanese financial industry and government edifice to hire the heck out of the Harajuku quick-service restaurants’ temp staff, life will be grand.

Though in fairness to the financial industry while I was looking a bit bewildered at the ATM at the new bank one of the staff helpfully offered to help (“Are you trying to send a transfer to another bank? Which one? I’ll read them to...” “ahh I need to ほかの金融機関 don’t I”)

Silly me, was looking for “Another bank” (the way it’s written on most ATMs) and I missed “Another financial institution” for 30 seconds. After I started zooming through screens after that she said “Ah well seems you know how to do this.” “Seems so but I appreciate the help!”
