If you want to really scare yourself about e.g. the extent to which tech companies are tracking you, try casually mentioning a brand name (nike, m&s, whatever) with your phone out and then watch what ads get shown to you over the next few days.

So we're technologists and can agree that software does some things and doesn't do other things, right? That thing, that thing is not a thing software actually does. It is easy to convince one's fleshy hardware that the software must do that thing, but it is still not true.

You can create a similar effect for yourself by saying "women in red dresses" in front of the phone or thinking very hard, but not verbalizing, a brand name in the presence of your phone, then watching how many women in red dresses / that brand name waltz into your life.
