Optimize one’s professional life, if appropriate, for something which contributes to society, particularly in a leveraged fashion. Raise kids. Worry less about the micro and more about the macro. Contribute to institutions, partially meaning monetarily. Ignore the noise.

And honestly you can be waaaaay ahead of the curve with sustained, competent execution on 1~2 of these.

What are some examples of contributing with leverage (other than for ex. working as an employee at a tech co.) ? Asking as someone with dev skills.

Options include "Create something which wouldn't otherwise exist in the world." Generally avoid being siloed into a line of business sort of job; if you must be so siloed, pick a gigantic silo that you have material impact on. Impact = size times leverage. Cross-class.

You mean for ex open source sw that gets used? I work for a finance firm - I’ve written internal software for their asset management biz, but that doesn’t seem to produce leveraged effects.

I think that finance is generally a fairly leveraged application of software to the problems of the world, but there might be some questions about "If I didn't do X, would X still be done" margins to think about. Tough to speculate externally on degree of leverage at your firm.
