I had some salaryman buddies who were train buffs, who swear blind that they're gold mechanical watches because "you never know if you can trust the computer when the chips are on the line", but I think the real reason is it establishes continuity with the tradition of service.

(And there is legitimate social purpose in saying "Look, young man, at the conductor with the gold watch. He's carrying the watch because his is a sacred trust. If you do very well at school and work diligently, some day you, too, may aspire to carrying that watch.")

I can see why that sounds true, but I’ve never known anyone in NYC to actually check the subway schedule - if I miss the 3:57AM train, then I can just take the one at 4:02. Does the Tokyo system even let you enter the station at that hour?

Obviously, hitting the schedule is better than not, and I’d be the last to argue that the MTA is perfect, but to call it not “useful” is just absurd.

Alternatively - have no schedule , or drivers? Sky train (automated) in Vancouver has trains entering the station every three minutes at rush hour.

Of course part of the problem is that they keep adjusting the schedule to meet the sad reality and declare the problem solved.
