I was far, far more reticent about sending unsolicited emails than most entrepreneurs I know—I have probably sent one but not obvious that I've sent ten, ever—but cold pitching people is a really, really useful thing to have in your toolbox.

The "because he started rich" may be somewhat accurate, just indirectly. People who grow up with large networks of influential people are far more comfortable cold-calling other influential people.

Fuck, I coulda had a career in genomics starting in high school, but cold-calling people who you don’t know and asking for jobs just isn’t done, even when they’ve told you they want you, you know. Among the many ways rural Iowa feels like Japan

Have you got a formula for composing a cold email? That's the bit I'm stuck on at the moment.

Short, be nice. Follow the golden rule. Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to people being busy. People will plan to respond, then new emails push yours to the bottom of their inbox. Follow up. You're emailing them because it will help them too, right? If not, why?

OT, but this was nice from the OP: >If I had to start over I would prioritize health — exercise, diet, sleep, socialization, getting outside for fresh air. I would be nicer to those who love me, and try to opt for kindness over cleverness.
