I’ve wondered if the inability to quote passages of podcasts is why they often seem much more “real”: it’s a bit safer and people aren’t self-editing as much as they have to with internet-published prose.

I do not feel like this is the mechanism, because it is also true of podcasts which produce (at substantial expense / effort) searchable, quotable transcripts, sometimes with timestamps. Data point of one: Podcasts don't feel like A Deliverable to me like writing does.

This lets one do things that might not work like just riff on down a tangent for a while and see what alchemy develops. That can survive as a tangent in written work but the perceived effort of sitting down to do exploratory writing is very, very high.
